My daughter wasn't walking into lessons as a brand-new musician, so I appreciated that her instructors took the time to understand where she was musically and what she actually wanted from her lessons.
Rather than simply handing her a book and working through it page by page, they experimented.

When something wasn't quite clicking, they were willing to try something else until they found what she was vibing with most.

I'd hear a younger student learning an instrument in one room, a piano lesson happening in another and someone working on their voice down the hall. And the students weren't all little kids.

Every instructor we had the opportunity to meet was patient, encouraging and genuinely enjoyable to work with.
I was equally impressed by the communication from the studio itself. It was always easy to reach someone, explain what my daughter was looking for or communicate where she was musically.
And perhaps most importantly, I never felt like the goal was to fit her into a predetermined mold.
Dana V incorporates fundamentals like technique, music literacy and theory into lessons, but students are also encouraged to bring in music that excites them and explore different styles as they progress.
That's a balance I really appreciate.
🎶 Building Confidence Beyond the Lesson Room
For students who want to take their music beyond weekly lessons, Dana V also provides opportunities to perform.
Students can participate in recitals and other performance opportunities, but performing isn't required before they're comfortable. One of the studio's particularly sweet traditions is Recitals of Relevance, where students have performed within the local community, including senior communities and the Louisville Farmers Market.
Because music education doesn't have to be about creating the next professional musician.
It can build confidence. Give a kid a creative outlet. Teach the discipline of practicing something until it finally clicks. Help a teenager find their own style. Or simply become something they enjoy for the rest of their life.
And that's what I enjoyed most about being at Dana V Music: being surrounded by people of different ages, abilities and interests who were all finding their own way to make music.
